Dogs: Blind sled dog set to retire

Isobel ran against the odds and has been filmed by NBC TVI

Isobel the sled dog is hanging up her harness in Churchill, Man.

The nine-year-old Siberian husky-malamute cross is set to retire in January. What makes her well-deserved rest remarkable is that she has been running for the past five years completely blind.

She lost her vision but not her spirit, said owner Gerald Azure.

Everything seemed fine with Isobel until one day five years ago, when she staggered to a halt in the middle of a sled run.

Dogs: Puppy love: Man travels to Greece to rescue dog, brings back two

KINGSTON — In the middle of his 8,000-kilo-metre plane ride from Toronto to Greece to try to find the injured dog he had been forced to leave behind, Ted Davidson wondered if he wasn't just a little bit crazy.

"It crossed my mind once or twice. I have a very soft spot in my heart for dogs and an equally soft head."

But it was the ex-military man's sense of duty that kept him going on his mission to bring home the stray dog he had fallen for on his September vacation.

"The dog had befriended me," he said, sitting in the living room of his Kingston home, both his new dogs finally at his feet. "And when she was hurt, I couldn't do anything."

Dogs: Yappy ending for puppy flushed down toilet

LONDON (AFP) - A puppy in Britain had a lucky escape after a four-year-old boy accidentally flushed it down the toilet when he was trying to wash it, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported on Monday.

The week-old cocker spaniel's young owner, Daniel Blair, thought the puppy needed a wash after it got muddy playing in the garden, so he put it in the toilet and flushed it.

But his plan went disastrously wrong when the animal was swept away and became trapped in a waste pipe for nearly four hours.

Firefighters and animal welfare officers could not reach it, so Daniel's mother eventually called a plumber, who found the dog lying upside down in a pipe about 20 metres away from their house in Northolt, west London.

TRURO – Canines will soon have a place of their own to run freely in Truro (Nova Scotia).

Town councillors gave the green light to a permanent off-leash dog park on Monday after discussing the merits of temporary locations.

“It would make much more sense to me to pick a site that could be permanent and develop that,” said Coun. Charles Cox.

Dogs: Dog Finally Collared After Cop Forced To Shoot At It In Ritzy Neighbourhood

A bizarre manhunt ended Thursday night in one of Toronto ritziest neighbourhoods. Or in this case, a dog hunt.

It started around 3pm Thursday when cops arrived at a home located at 14 Royal Oak Dr., in the Lawrence and Bayview area.

An officer was in the neighbourhood investigating reports of a menacing dog on the loose when the animal turned on him. The German Shepherd, a 6-year-old named Coco, was guarding one of the expensive houses. It's not clear how it got loose but the animal apparently tried to attack a girl before turning on the cop.

Dogs: Stevensville canine top dog in Canada

Ikena Hilmayer has a passion for, well, Passion.

Passion, her eight-year-old Belgium Tervuren, was recently named top dog at the 15th annual HIT of Hits obedience competition in Ottawa.

Under the watchful eye of the judges, Hilmayer directed Passion through a routine that included heeling, jumping, retrieving and exercises to test her scent and tracking ability.

"We make a great team," Hilmayer said. "We're like a synchronized skating team, she steps the same time I step."

This was Passion's fourth win at the national event, considered the Olympics of dog obedience competitions.

Hilmayer also competed with Levi, a small black dog with pointy ears known as a schipperke.

Five-year-old Levi won in the novice category.

"It was beyond my wildest dreams for both of them," Hilmayer said.

Dogs: Let pets travel in cabin on flights

Prior to cancellation of pets in cabin by Air Canada, we retirees flew up to eight return flights from our residing city per year.

Since we only have Air Canada that leaves our city, we have no other choice but to give our Canadian dollars to U. S. competitors.

U. S. air carriers are more than happy to accept, for a fee, our two-kilogram non-allergenic health-certified (which is a border requirement), non-shedding Yorkshire terrier, that must be kept in a carrier under the seat during the entire flight.
